00. Be excellent to each other! At the very least be civil. This includes being communicative with each other OOCly. Unsure about something? Have a problem? Contact the player, and if that fails, contact me.

01. Stay as active as you can manage. There is no AC here, but the game is nothing without you!

02. 1864 is a interchangeably action-spam and prose-based. Remember: there are no texts or phone calls, but there are letters! All threads should be posted at [community profile] eighteensixtyfour. Please tag your posts appropriately and mark them open or closed somewhere.

03. You may play characters from The Vampire Diaries canon and other canons; however they must be written into the setting somehow.

04. Have fun!

✒ F A Q ✒

What is this place?
This is an invite-only game set in nineteenth century Mystic Falls, Virginia à la The Vampire Diaries canon. However, it is an alternate universe in a few key ways: characters from the canon and other canons have been written into the time and setting. There is also no supernatural element. For example! Caroline Forbes was born the daughter of the town sheriff, William Forbes, and is now a bright young debutante.

Wait, when is this place?
The community name might throw you off, but that's more a homage to The Vampire Diaries' repeated references and flashbacks to 1864. The game actually takes place in 1860, before the Civil War begins in 1864. Check out the Settings & Locale page for more about what to expect in nineteenth century Mystic Falls.

How historically accurate is this place? How historically accurate do I have to write my characters?
To the first: as historically accurate as this librarian-in-training can make it. I have written a few short essays and provided links to more information about the general region + time period on the Historical References page, but please don't let this intimidate you! I am no expert and being an expert is not expected of anyone here. Don't have your character whip out a smartphone or miraculously reference a working toilet and we'll all be good. But if you want to be hardcore about it and have any questions or doubts, look it up yourself using the links provided or ask me.

So, will the Civil War ever start in-game?
If we get to that point, yes! I will post announcements if anything significant happens as time goes on. These announcements will also include other tidbits, like new books published that month, historical events, etc. to provide some context to the times.

How does time work in-game?
The game works in real-time, but back-tagging is totally okay!

How do the NPCs work?
If your character references them in passing in game, no need to worry; go for it! For instance, if you would like your character to reference that Giuseppe Salvatore is a strict parent, go for it! However, please extend the courtesy of letting other affected players know and okay anything else. Giuseppe is the parent of both Damon and Stefan, for instance, so if you'd like Giuseppe to say or do something that would affect them, please contact the mun of Damon and/or Stefan; if you are the mun of Damon or Stefan, make sure both of you are on the same page.

If you'd like to include an NPC in a plot, let me know and we can work something out. There is the possibility either I or another player may volunteer to take up the mantle.

What if I want to claim an NPC as my character?
Claim them! Keep in mind there is a possibility that the character's past actions as an NPC might still hold in game. Unfortunately the nature of the game does not lend for a lot flexibility in those cases, but we can all try to work something out if possible.

What will happen to my character if I want to drop them?
This will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Will there be any world-building, plots, or events?
Yes! In many ways, yes, but perhaps a little differently than in other games, given the constraints of the setting and time period. There won't suddenly be an invasion of aliens, but there will be world-building, plots, and events!

First of all, you may suggest a location, be it a new home, shop, or landmark for or by your character. With time and events, other types of world-building may present itself.

While the overarching plot will remain the lead-up to the Civil War and the toil and division in town because of that, player plots are also incredibly encouraged. This game will be what you make of it, driven mostly by the players. I will post events as well: town meetings, barbecues, balls, fundraising auctions, Sundays at church, etc., and I encourage everyone and anyone to do the same if fancy strikes them.

Wow, this is great. Can I invite someone to play here?
Sure! The more the merrier! Just contact me so I know who to expect.

Is there an activity check?
Nope!

How many characters am I allowed to play?
Up to three. However, only two characters from the same canon per player and those characters must not interact significantly in canon.

Are duplicate characters allowed?
No.

Am I allowed to bring in an OC?
Not at this time.
